EU: De-escalation and return to negotiations are necessary
New York, March 10 (Hibya) - European Union leaders said they are ready to contribute to reducing tensions in the Middle East and called on the parties to de-escalate and return to negotiations.
According to CCTV, following a video conference with regional leaders, European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that the EU is ready to contribute in every possible way to help reduce tensions and facilitate a return to the negotiating table.
The leaders also stressed that dialogue and diplomacy are the only viable path forward.
Von der Leyen and Costa reiterated the EU’s determination to preserve regional stability in the Middle East and called for the protection of civilians and full respect for international law, international humanitarian law, and the principles of the United Nations Charter.
It was also stated that the EU is open to strengthening maritime defense operations in order to protect critical sea routes and prevent any disruptions in vital supply chains.
